Holodomor 1932 – 1933

On November 7th, 2003 the following joint statement by 65 UN member states was adopted by the UN General Assembly:

“The Great Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine (Holodomor), which took from 7 million to 10 million innocent lives, and became a national tragedy for the Ukrainian people.

In the early 1930s, in the very heart of Europe – in a region considered to be the Soviet Union’s breadbasket – Stalin’s Communist regime committed a horrendous act of genocide against millions of Ukrainians.

The Communist government imposed exorbitant grain quotas, in some cases confiscating supplies down to the last seed. Farm animals and all edible vegetables were also confiscated.

The Ukrainian populated regions were isolated by armed units, so that people could not go in search of food to the neighbouring Soviet regions where food was readily available. The result was the Ukrainian genocide of  1932-1933, known as the Holodomor, or extermination by famine.

On May 7, 2008 the Saskatchewan Legislature passed Bill 40,  the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day Act and sent the Bill for assent, making Saskatchewan the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as genocide.
